ANALEMMA HOUSE

This house winds its way down its steep site, connecting its internal spaces through a continuous, three-dimensional line.

The concept design for this house drew from the clients’ interest in astronomy. An ‘analemma’ is a diagram that shows the position of the sun in the sky as seen from a fixed location on Earth at the same solar time, as that position varies over the course of a year: typically, the diagram will resemble the figure '8'. Translating this idea into architecture, a continuous three-dimensional ‘line’ loops through the spaces within, connecting these zones, and continuously morphing from roof, to wall, to floor, and back again.
Programmatically, the concept design accommodates generous living, dining and kitchen spaces on one level; bedrooms and a fully-contained space for visitors; an artist’s studio; double garage; and outdoor patio.
